Thumb up2 Understanding Mobile Phone Networks and Plans

Though cell phones and land line phones are mainly used for the same service – giving and receiving calls--the technologies they use differ greatly. The technology that assures cellular service is far more sophisticated than the one used for traditional telephony service. This is due to the fact that mobile telephone has many additional functions and aspects.
This article is meant to make clear the way cell phones networks function and how certain services are available.

Basic Concepts of Functioning 1. Mobile phones are radios. Communication is made by the mean of radio lines and follows radio transmission rules. Thus, information travels along radio lines – to and from device – using a two way radio systems. Still there is a difference that makes cell phone something more than a radio set. This is the compatibility with computer concepts and sophisticate programs. All this enables an advanced network which makes it possible to support SMS text messages, conferencing, call waiting features, calendar systems, etc.

    2. Cells concept. The network is not a single cell/block, it is rather a certain area divided into several cells. One cell covers about 26 square kilometers. Each cell has a base station/tower equipped with radio technology to manage, receive and redirect the signals.
When a call is made from a cellular device it keeps hoping along the cells in order to get to the needed number. This cell system gives the advantage of reusing same frequency. In other words, several users can use the same small cell on the same frequency without locking resources to one phone call only.

    3. Computer based applications. Cell phone technologies support apps that function just like computer programs. Thus, SMS, WAP, etc. accesses are nothing but typical computer applications. SMS functions just like traditional e-mail system. It is controlled by a server. WAP relays on computer programming and is also controlled by a WAP server.
The text messages you send travel over the cellular network and are stored in a server. Then they are delivered to the recipient. This computer network facility is totally independent from the cellular service. Which means that you can get SMS messages while making/receiving calls.

WAP is a facility which depends on Internet service. It is integrated into cellular networks for Internet users. Using this facility you can perform downloads, access information services such as weather updates, flight schedules, etc.

Cell Phone Plans: Prepaid and Standard As time went by and different cell phone plans became available, many questioned about the best service option came up. At the moment, we can benefit from two basic plans: prepaid cell phone service and the standard cell phone service.

The first one makes it possible to control how much money you want to spend each month on cell phone communication. The second one – standard plan consists in monthly charges. Both plans are good enough to offer great facilities and meet requirements of each person.

Prepaid planThe prepaid plan is primarily meant for users who wants to spend less money and speaks less on the phone. This plan gives the possibility to buy more phone credits if needed, thus one can keep track of expenses.

The prepaid plan has lately gained popularity continuing to grow at a worldwide scale. It is especially popular in developing countries, where cell phone tariff is too high for the user's purse. This allows almost everyone to make use of cell phones, buying cell phone credits when the budget allows.

One of the strong spots of the prepaid service is the fact that you can report to the service provider the lost/stolen phone and you don't have to worry about misuse of your phone chip.

Standard plan The standard cell phone plan serves the most active users and is meant for those who don't have time to lose on buying cell phone credits all the time. This service usually has a less expensive tariff than the prepaid one. However, users tend to talk more, thus spending more money on cell phone services. Still, if a cell phone is crucial for one's business, then standard plan will be somewhat sparing.

So you need to consider your life style, personal and professional needs, etc. before choosing among the options.
