3G, 4G and LTE Networks to be Installed in Pakistan

The government of Pakistan is set to allow the setting up of 3G, 4G and LTE networks so that it can replace the already existing 2nd generation service. Pakistan has over 94% of its total population of 117 million people subscribed to the 2G cellular service according to reports released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. 2G cellular service providers that operate in Pakistan include Telenor, Mobilink, Ufone, Warid and CM Pak. Multinational telecommunication companies have been attracted to Pakistan and this has led companies such as China Mobile, Singtel, Telenor, Orascom and Etisalat to invest in the country.

3G, 4G and LTE Networks Pakistan

Many 2G cellular devices are limited to the use of GPRS and Edge technology when it comes to mobile data for accessing the internet. The government of Pakistan is set to license mobile cellular service companies that will be allowed to provide the 3G, 4G and LTE network to its customers which must operate in blocks 9.8 + 9.8 MHz each, with successful bidders being allowed to choose either one or a maximum of two blocks of spectrum. Previous efforts to install the 3G and 4G networks was hampered by differing administrative reasons and also lack of frequency spectrum licenses by the government. Successful bidders will be issued licenses that will last for about 15 years with the value of each license or spectrum approximated to be worth about $210 million. Frequency blocks are set to be three namely A, B and C. The above information was provided in the information memorandum released by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

The provision of the 3G and 4G network is good news for both the subscribers and the government in large especially for the fact that the government will earn about $630 million. The setting up of the frequency that will be key to providing the 3G and 4G network is already underway as ZTE is already setting up 1,500 GSM new base stations, 7000 HSPA base stations and 2,000 LTE base stations. ZTE selected Telenor Pakistan, which takes care of awarding of government contracts on telecommunication, to provide the required equipment that will be used in the project that will expand and upgrade the national network. The period for the installation of all of the base stations is to take a period of 5 years starting from 2012 and 2017.
