Toshiba to launch world's largest and fastest SD card

Toshiba has announced it will be launching a 64GB SDXC card, which they claim will be the world's fastest and largest SD card. The card boasts write speeds of 35MB per second and read speeds of 60MB per second, and is compliant with the latest SD memory standard. In addition to the 64GB SDXC, Toshiba also announced they would be releasing two more storage cards: a 32GB SDHC card and a 16GB SDHC card – and importantly, both offer the same speeds as the 64GB SDXC.

The new cards are compliant with the new SD memory standard, version 3.00, UHS 400, which bumps up the maximum read speed to 60MB per second, and the maximum write speed to 35MB per second. In addition, the new SDXC memory card specification supports a maximum card capacity of 2TB, carrying on from the 32GB maximum capacity that the SDHC specification supports.

The 64GB SDXC card from Toshiba will be in mass production early next year, but samples should be shipped in November. The 16GB and 32GB SDHC cards won't be in mass production until next spring either, but samples will be sent out in November and December respectively.

SD cards have become more popular over the years, and are now commonly used in digital cameras, MP3 players, as well as mobile phones and some digital camcorders. Although Toshiba's first SDXC card is still months away from the shelves, with no price announced, it is surely a sign of bigger things to come in the distant future.
