PORTLAND: The City of Roses
ASSALAM-U-ALAIKUM,
Portland is the city located in the state of Oregon. Its area is about 376.6 kilometers square with a population of 5, 93,820 inhabitants. The city is about 173 feet above the sea level. The name of the city was selected on toss by the flip of coin by the two discoverers of it the Asa Lovejoy and Francis W.Pettygrove. Lovejoy wanted to name it after his home town Boston and Petty grove wanted to name it after his hometown Portland, Maine. Petty grove won the toss in best of three round by winning two times out of three flips.
It has two rivers the Willamette river and the great Columbia River. There is a strange tradition of the Portland and new Jersey people that you can’t pump your own gas and you must have an attendant to do so. The people there love this tradition and every effort to finish this has been regretted. Portland has no Sales Tax except on Hotels and Car Rentals but they had a high income tax i-e 9%. The people living there are very much white and are considered as one of the whitest city of all. It has more than 70% of its population as white this is because it has a racist background and a grim history. They did’nt allowed blacks to enter the city.
The slogan of the city is “It’s not easy being green”. They do deserve this slogan as they had to work very much for many years to make the city green and attractive for the citizens and visitors. They had created so much parks and grounds all around that there is just greenery and roses everywhere due to which it is called the city of roses. Also there is held annual festival of roses regularly. Each year the festival is held for about a month and is held usually in the month of June in which there is high vegetation of roses. Two largets Parades are also held there The Starlight Parade and Grand Floral Parade. Except city of roses the city is also nicknamed as Stumptown because when the city was founded a large number of trees were cut down and the stumps were not picked up for many time.
