A Short Story of Life
In the United States, children consume 2.1 million packs of cigarettes each day. Currently 1 out of every 5 high school students smoke. Smoking is referred to as a pediatric disease, as nearly all smokers start in childhood. While about 58% of high school smokers try to quit each year, only 4% are able to do so without help.
Consequently, A Short Story of Life is based on our belief that smoking is best prevented in childhood. This program is specifically designed to help children learn about smoking and understand the process of addiction. The A Short Story of Life curriculum is divided into different age groups and mainly focuses on the cost of and life lost from smoking. Through the teacher-administered curriculum, students should learn about the risks of tobacco use, be encouraged to share these risks with others, and have the support they need to be tobacco free.
The smoking education-prevention effort at our ESC utilized the program - A Short Story of Life Tobacco Prevention Education Program - for Grades 4-12. Previous data for Texas students found that 32.6% of 18 year old smoke an increase of 3.8% each year from grade 4 through grade 12.
- In our data from much younger children we found that 18.9% of Texas school children had tried smoking in the last month
- 5.7% of children reported current smoking
- 76 % of this group had tried or were trying to quit (20% had tried in the past week).
- 2.6% of students reported using chew tobacco, snuff or dip in the last 30 days.
- 8.9% of students had already quit smoking.
- 83 % of students demonstrated large and significant gains in knowledge about the harms and costs of smoking after the program.
- 10% of students reported decreased scores on a smoking susceptibility scale suggesting that the program decreases student expectations about becoming a smoker.
- 70% of students indicated they prefer our Tobacco Prevention-Education Program to any other program they have seen in any setting.
- Only 4.4 % of Texas children were aware of school or community resources to quit smoking. In year two a similar program on smokeless tobacco will be available to participating schools.
