ENGLISH 2ND YEAR: Lesson 13: OVERPOPULATION

    ENGLISH 2ND YEAR:

    Lesson 13: OVERPOPULATION

Q1. Why is the term, ‘overpopulation’ not easy to define? What are the reasons that the author advance to make his point?

Ans. The term ‘overpopulation’ is not easy to define because it is a relative term. Each community is different from the other and there is no universal rule or standard on the basis of which it can be defined. Each has different growth rate, standard of living, culture, types of economy and many other things. Therefore, no universal definition of the world ‘overpopulation’ is possible.

Q2. Try to define the different terms, such as, housing, food, health, and happiness, employment, etc. with reference to Pakistan so that we may decide whether Pakistan is overpopulated or not.

Ans. ‘housing’ refers to place of residence where one feels safe from all sorts of dangers and fears. In Pakistan most of the people are deprived of good housing.
‘Food’, according to the writer, should contain meat, fruit and vegetable etc. in proper proportion. In Pakistan, people are under nutrition because most of them are poor and cannot afford standard food.
The definition of ‘health’ is also controversial because different people define it in the light of child mortality rate, life expectancy in a particular society. In this respect Pakistan is overpopulated because it has not been successful in reducing mortality rate and increasing life expectancy. ‘Happiness’, according to the writer, is a vague term which cannot be defined in clear terms. Everyone has his own idea of happiness. It depends on the fulfillment of man’s personal desires. Here, too, ‘Pakistan is overpopulated because the desire of the people cannot be fulfilled in view of the manager resources.
Employment means the availability of jobs to every individual in a society. In Pakistan, people, are jobless because of non-availability of resources. It is ‘overpopulated’ in this respect too.

Q3. Do you think the large population as asset or a drain on the economy of Pakistan?

Ans. Large population can be an asset in those countries where resources are in abundance and man power is needed for their proper utilization. In Pakistan, however, it is a drain on the economy because here the resources available are not large enough to provide the basic necessaries of a happy life to the people of the country. Overpopulation casts dangerous shadows on the economy, culture, social organization and the lifestyle of the people of Pakistan.
