    CLASS 10 -- ESSAY: Traveling as a part of education

    Traveling as a part of education:

    In the middle ages in Europe the idea was that no education was complete without traveling. To this practice bacon refers when he says, ďtravel in the younger sort is a part of education, in the elder a part of experienceĒ. In those days when traveling was risky and expensive, it was not taken simply for amusement to divert on self but as a serious business meant to develop the mind. When a man has finished his education without the four walls of a college OR university, he has learnt something of what bookish lore can give. It is his next duty to attend to the call of the outside world, to see and new things for himself and not to look at the world through the spectacles of books.
    Life is real, life is practical, but much of what he learns from books is theoretical. Therefore he is required to translate his idea into action and to have practical knowledge of men and things to equip him for the struggle of life. This practical knowledge is gathered from first hand intercourse with the outside world. What he learns from his books is more OR less ideal and imaginary; but real life does not always move according to the literary canons of move lists and dramatists.
    The grandeur and the varied beauty of nature have an ennobling effect on menís soul. He sees beauty has an ennobling effect on menís soul. He sees beauty which he never saw in his life, he feels an inspiration which was never felt before; the mystic influence of nature creeps unconsciously into the soul, he forgets his limitations and becomes a part and parcel of a vast universe of which he and nature are but parts.
    As a travel abroad we study also the political institution and iconic development of other nations. We see different types of government and can note and compare their respective merits and defects. The way in which citizen of different countries discharges study and no less is the economic development of nations. We come back with a broad outlook and learn that good things are not the monopoly of any particular country or nation. In the light of this new experience we set out to reform our country, preserving what is good and rejecting what is harmful to the nation. Thus become sober reformers and our travels benefit not only us but the country we live in.
    It is for all these reasons that traveling has been spoken as a part of education and it has fascinated people from early times. They have defined the dangers and difficulties of the way to broken their mind. Behind pilgrimage also there is this hidden motive, but in order that we may profit by travel, we must travel not to pass our time in continuous rounds of pleasure, but with a desire to see and learn then it will impart to us more impressive lesson than books and lectures ever can. It is for all these reasons that it has been thought that no education is complete without traveling.
