    CLASS 10 - ESSAY:Horrors of war

    Horrors of war:

Wars have always been horrible. They have always meant death and destruction and disease. The earliest battles had their horrors. Even when the weapons of war were simple and comparatively less dangerous, they killed and diseased people. Normal civic life was upset. Things were scarce. Prices were high. Passions were wild. All these consequences of war were there and yet the wars were less horrible than modern wars.
Modern wars have become far more horrible. The process began in the nineteenth century. Progress in science and industrialization went hand in had. Modern wars came in the walk. By now the horrors of war seem to have reached their peak.
Let us look at some of the major horrors of a modern war. We need not anticipate the horrors of the next world war if it comes. Quite possibly it will mean just one big horror. And that will be the total destruction of the whole world. For the time being we shall confine our glance other horrors with which the two world wars have made us familiar.
Thus the first horror of a modern war is that it must ultimately become a world war. The time for local OR regional wars is over. Now few countries can hope to keep out of war for very long. Any battle can now flare up into a major world war.
Then the horrors of war are widespread. They are distributed all over the world. Just as epidemics like flu, travel all over the world these days, the disease and misery brought about by war also embraced the whole world. No concert of it remains safe. The neutral countries suffer almost as those that are active participants. The economic structure of the world is upset. Even the smallest and the brightest war have its impact on prices everywhere in the world.
Then war means poverty and disease. Some people try to enumerate the benefits of war. They say it removes the unemployment. We might as well say that it removes the employed. No problem is really solved by any war. It always gives rise to a fresh crop of problems. It is followed by pestilence and agony. It is accompanied by groans and tears. It is no remedy for unemployment OR for anything.
Prisoners of war and refugees of war suffer great miseries. Prisoners are tortured and killed at will. Refugees knock about in search of shelter. During the last world war thousands of Jews had to flee Germany. They were persecuted and tortured. Even now there are thousands of these refugees spread all over the western world awaiting rehabilitation. We can have come idea of the miserable experience of being refugees.
The task of making a list of all the horrors of war will be enormous. Let us hope that our fear of a total destruction will save us from the suicidal folly of another war.
